Matters of immigration can put a great stress on someone's life and the life of those around them. Having an immigration attorney on your side that you know, and feel comfortable with, is a way to relieve a good portion of this stress.
Finding the right attorney in immigration could possibly be the most important decision you will make in determining how your case turns out. If you have friends or a family member who have had an attorney, or knows of one who specializes in immigration cases, you might ask a few questions to find out if his work was satisfactory and got the desired results. If you are new to the area and really do not know anyone to advise you, there are other ways of finding a competent attorney.
First you will want to try the State Bar lawyer referral service in the state where you are located. When you call the State Bar, just tell them you need the lawyer referral service. Once you are connected they will ask you what kind of legal problem you are having. All you need to do at this point is tell them you are needing an attorney in immigration. You do not need to go into all the details because the person who answers is basically a receptionist who has no knowledge of the law. Their job is just to find out what sort of attorney you need, go down the list and find an attorney that fits your specific need and give you their number. Once you get the number, you are off to a good start. There are two requirements for an attorney to be listed with the lawyer referral service. The attorney must be in good standing with the State Bar Association, and have malpractice insurance. This means he should know and be competent at his job.
The first thing you want to do after getting the phone number of an attorney who specializes in immigration cases is give them a call and make an appointment. You will probably need to be prepared to pay $60-$75 for a consultation fee, but that is to be expected. Before going to see your potential attorney, be sure you gather any and all pertinent information they may need to evaluate your case. They will require it to give you the most knowledgeable advice.
Upon arriving for your appointment, remember, you are paying for the consultation and you are there to interview the attorney, not him interview you. Ask questions about his experience in handling your particular type of case. Be sure you have a clear understanding of all fees involved so you don't get any surprises later. If you have any family members who are going to be involved in the case, be sure and take them with you. What you need to be doing in general is making certain you have someone you feel comfortable with and trust to take care of your immigration case as if it were his own.
If you feel the attorney you have found meets the above qualifications, then prepare to be patient. In most cases immigration paperwork is not something that can be handled overnight with even the best of attorneys. You are paying him for his expertise as an attorney in immigration, so just follow his advice and let him do his job.
