Free Immigration Consultation From an Attorney In Immigration

If you are interested in becoming a U.S. Citizen there is, of course, mounds of paper work to go through first. It is almost impossible for someone unfamiliar with the legal process to do all that must be done on their own. You are going to need an attorney who is not only competent, but is a specialist in the area of immigration and is familiar with all the legal obstacles that need to be overcome. Below are a few of the legal procedures an attorney will need to be familiar with to obtain a green card for you. After you understand what has to be done, we will then discuss obtaining a free immigration consultation.

In order for a foreigner to work and reside in the United States, they need to apply for a green card. There are three steps to obtaining a green card, which is good for 10 years.

1 - The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service is the agency that will be issuing you your green card. Your attorney will first have to submit all required paperwork to their office to be reviewed. After your papers have been thoroughly gone over by one of their agents, it will either be approved, or not approved.

2 - If you are fortunate to have your green card approved, the UACIS will forward your approved application to the National Visa Center. There is only a certain number of Visa numbers available for each year, so you may not actually be able to get your number for quite a few months. You must be patient.

3 - Once the National Visa Center gives you a number, it will be forwarded to the U.S. Embassy in your home country.

These are the three steps that must be taken in order to get your green card. Just written down in these few sentences make them sound easy, but they are not. There is extensive paperwork that is required, much of which must come from the originals in your home country. It will be a very time consuming process that may seem very frustrating and make you feel like giving up. However, if you want a green card, you must follow the required legal obligations to obtain one.

Although it is almost impossible to get an attorney to handle your case pro bono, there are many attorneys who will give you a free immigration consultation. Many attorneys want to charge you for a consultation, so you will need to do a little research to find which attorneys offer this. You might try the yellow pages, or better still, search the internet. Just go to your favorite search engine and type in the words "free immigration consultation" and you will get a variety of results. Be sure you also type in the name of the city you are going to be applying in, or it will give you a huge national list.

Once you have located the names of some attorneys who give free immigration consultations, you might want to check out their credentials to make sure they are in good standing with their State Bar Association. You can get their number in the phone book and give them a call. If you are told your attorney is not a member, you should move on to the next one on your list as this probably means they have had problems in the past with their work ethics.
